Check an interstate mover against official federal records

For an interstate household-goods mover or broker, open the government record yourself, then compare its identity, role, status, and record date with your written estimate. For a move entirely within one state, also check the relevant state or local regulator.

Use the official record in four steps

  1. Copy the written identity.Find the legal or DBA name, USDOT number, MC number, address, and whether the document calls the company a mover or broker.
  2. Search an official source.Use the FMCSA mover search for an interstate household-goods company. Use SAFER to search one company by USDOT, MC/MX number, or name.
  3. Match exact fields.Prefer an exact identifier match. A name search can return multiple matches, so do not select one only because the name looks similar.
  4. Record the source and time.Write down what the official page displayed and when you checked it. Follow the official link again before relying on time-sensitive status information.

Handle uncertain results conservatively

Multiple matches

Do not guess. Compare the USDOT or MC number, address, and legal or DBA name with the written estimate.

No match found

Report only that the search returned no match for the information entered. Check for transcription differences and use another official search method.

Official record unavailable

Say the official record was unavailable when checked. Do not replace it with a commercial directory or infer a status.

Fields conflict

Record the mismatch and ask the company to explain it in writing. A mismatch is a question to resolve, not a fraud or legal conclusion.

Federal records have a defined scope

FMCSA's Protect Your Move resources focus on interstate moves. A move entirely within one state may be governed by a state or local regulator instead. A federal search result does not establish every license, registration, or requirement that may apply to an intrastate move.

For the underlying distinction, read interstate vs. local moving rules and moving broker vs. carrier.
